Hānau is the Hawaiian word for birth.
The Hānau series is based off of the stories ('ōlelo) about Pele the goddess of fire and how she created or gave birth to the islands. Lava and obsidian are represented by the colorful patterning and the dark textured surface. These pieces are created using advanced and extremely time consuming techniques to produce a beautiful and refined sculpture.
Hānau
This is a sculptural vase made using murrine and cane. Both techniques require the stretching and condensing of colored glass to achieve the desired pattern. After the pattern is made the whole piece is then covered in multiple coats of crushed glass. The layers are then cut, ground, and polished in specific areas to reveal the vibrant colors and patterning beneath.
